FISMA:
- FISMA Definition
FISMA, the Federal Information Security Management Act, was developed to
strengthen computer and network security of the federal government
and affiliated parties, such as government contractors, by
requiring yearly audits. Cybersecurity within the federal
government had previously been neglected before FISMA was
established. The FISMA Implementation Project was created
in 2003 to produce key security standards and guidelines,
including but not limited to security categorization of information

controls for information systems and verification of security
control effectiveness.
