Congressman Oxley’s Involvement in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002

Congressman Michael G. Oxley is Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services, The House Committee on Financial Services, consists of 37 Republicans, 32 Democrats, and 1 Independent, whose purpose is to watch over Wall Street, banks, and the insurance industry. As Chairman, Congressman Oxley is determined to: protect investors; ensure healthy markets exist in order for businesses to have access to capital that in turn creates jobs; maintain America’ leading role in finance, promote competition that results in a variety of choices and lower prices for consumers regarding financial products.

Congressman Oxley is the co-author of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. In response to corporate business scandals, this Act was designed to establish investor protections and set higher standards for corporate governance. Oxley played an integral role in developing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and his committee was the first to hold hearings on the financial fraud at Enron, WorldCom, and other companies.

Congressman Oxley earned his B.A. from Miami University and his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law, respectively. He is a former special agent of the FBI, which draws upon his career as an attorney and experience in law enforcement. He is an active member in various associations such as, the American, Ohio, and Findlay Bar Associations, the Rotary International, Findlay Elks, Ohio Farm Bureau, Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, and Sigma Chi fraternity.
