Article:
The perils of ignoring whistleblowers
World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz's recent scandal involving his making deals for his girlfriend at the bank, the US State Department, and the Pentagon, could have been avoided with proper procedures. An anonymous whistleblower sent two emails questioning the relationship, which were basically ignored. The whistleblower then gave his story to the media. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) put whistleblower protections in place, but a recent study shows that the number of employee whistleblowers fell after Sarbanes-Oxley. Some argue that controls put in place during SOX compliance may have lessened the need for whistleblowing, but others blame it on the ostracism that is often a result of whistleblowing. Even Sarbanes-Oxley may not be able to prescribe the best practices for whistleblower protection without the buy-in from managers and employees.
