SEC Faces Some Crucial Questions
The SEC is expected to make some important decisions in the next few weeks, including
changes to Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and legal initiatives including negotiation of corporate settlements and arbitration of brokerage disputes. Section 404 of Sarbanes-Oxley has been under intense scrutiny for its effect on US competitiveness, and so the SEC and the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board will present updated recommendations to reduce the costs of SOX compliance. Some fear that the SEC is favoring business over investors in its approach toward relaxing Sarbanes-Oxley, which has prompted an invitation for the five SEC commissioners to testify in front of the house oversight committee. A spokesperson for the SEC stated, in response, that "everything we do is on behalf of investors."
