House gives small companies extension on Sarbanes-Oxley
A recent House appropriation bill has extended the time for companies with a market value of less than $75 million to comply with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). Section 404 of SOX compliance requires companies to have their internal controls over financial processes certified by outside auditors. Larger companies have already achieved SOX compliance for the most part, though many have complained that the law is too costly. Complaints about the cost of Section 404 SOX compliance, in fact, prompted the SEC to issue additional guidance in the spring. Politicians are divided on the law's usefulness, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which believes that Sarbanes-Oxley and its revisions should first be tested on larger companies, is behind the new amendment.
