Businesses say accounting reform costly, onerous
Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) is the corporate governance law--passed with overwhelming support--that is intended to restore investor confidence by improving corporate accountability. The law has come under fire from critics and so SOX compliance requirements are currently being scrutinized for their effectiveness in preventing fraud. Sarbanes-Oxley's Section 404 is its most costly provision and requires companies to evaluate their internal controls over financial processes and then have these audited by an outside firm. The SEC's Chair has stated that the problem lies in the implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley, not in the law itself. For this reason, the SEC recently released guidance for companies to more efficiently comply with Section 404 of SOX compliance.
